Pass Plus

Passed your test? Build confidence for the journeys ahead, from busy town roads to your first motorway trip.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a practical training course for drivers who have passed their driving test. It is designed to develop your skills, broaden your experience and help you drive more safely. You can take it at any time after passing, although GOV.UK says it is most useful in your first year.

  • At least 6 hours of training
  • Six modules covering different roads and conditions
  • No final test: your instructor assesses you throughout
  • Training with a Pass Plus-registered approved driving instructor (ADI)

Pass Plus at a glance

  • Optional course, not a legal requirement
  • Mostly practical, in the car
  • You may be able to get an insurance discount
  • Certificate issued once you reach the standard in all six modules

What’s included in Pass Plus?

Pass Plus has six modules. Each one is built around a type of driving that many new drivers have little experience of by the time they pass.

1. Town driving

Busy traffic, junctions, parking and staying calm in built-up areas.

2. All-weather driving

Driving safely in rain, fog, wind and other changing conditions.

3. Rural roads

Bends, narrow lanes, changing road surfaces and spotting hazards early.

4. Night driving

Seeing and being seen in the dark, and coping with glare and reduced visibility.

5. Dual carriageways

Joining, overtaking and keeping a safe distance at higher speeds.

6. Motorways

Joining and leaving, lane discipline and driving safely at motorway speeds.

Pass Plus takes at least 6 hours. Modules are normally practical, although local conditions can mean some are theory based. There is no test at the end: your instructor assesses you throughout and you need to reach the required standard in every module.

Benefits of Pass Plus

  • Possible insurance discount. Some insurers offer one when you show your Pass Plus certificate. Not all do, and the amount varies.
  • Experience of new situations such as motorways, night driving and bad weather, with an instructor beside you.
  • More confidence driving on your own after passing.
  • No exam pressure. You are assessed as you go, not in a one-off test.
  • Flexible timing. Take it whenever suits you, although it is most useful in your first year of driving.
  • Discount can often be put on hold if you do not have a car yet. Check with your insurer first.

Worth knowing: insurance discounts depend on the insurer, and in some cases the saving may not cover the cost of the course. Ask your insurer what they offer before you book, and tell them how long ago you passed your test.

How it works

  1. Get in touch

Tell us when you passed and what you would like to improve.

  2. Take the six modules

Sessions with a Pass Plus-registered ADI, assessed as you go.

  3. Get your certificate

Once you reach the standard in all six, apply for your certificate and send it to your insurer.

Who is it for? Anyone who has passed their driving test and wants more experience on the road, especially new drivers and anyone nervous about motorways, night driving or busy towns. If you passed a while ago you can still take it, but check with your insurer whether the discount still applies.

Pass Plus questions

Is there a test at the end of Pass Plus?

No. Your instructor assesses you during the course, and you need to reach the required standard in all six modules.

How long does Pass Plus take?

At least 6 hours of training. Most of that time is spent driving.

Will I definitely get cheaper insurance?

Not guaranteed. Some insurers offer a discount and some do not, and the amount depends on the company. Check with your insurer before you book.

Can I take Pass Plus if I passed a long time ago?

Yes, it can be taken at any time. It is most useful in the year after passing, and some insurers may not give a discount after a year, so check with yours.

Is Pass Plus a legal requirement?

No, it is optional. It is a voluntary course designed to build on what you learned for your driving test.
