Preparing for your UK driving theory test can feel difficult, especially when you are learning road signs, traffic rules and hazard perception at the same time. The good news is that regular practice and the right revision plan can help you feel more confident.
At ZNR Driving School, we encourage learners in Croydon and the surrounding areas to build their road knowledge alongside their practical driving skills.
Here are seven helpful tips to prepare for your theory test.
1. Study the Highway Code
The Highway Code is one of the most important resources for learner drivers. Learn road signs, road markings, speed limits, junction rules, pedestrian crossings and safe stopping distances.
Try to understand why a rule exists rather than simply memorising an answer.
2. Practise theory questions regularly
Set aside 15–20 minutes each day for revision. Practise multiple-choice questions and review any answers you get wrong.
Keep a note of difficult questions and revisit them until you understand the correct answer.
3. Understand the hazard perception test
Hazard perception tests your ability to recognise developing hazards on the road.
For example, a parked car may become a hazard when its indicator starts flashing and it begins to pull into traffic. Practise recognising the moment when you may need to slow down or change direction.
Click when you see a developing hazard, rather than waiting until it becomes an immediate danger.
4. Know the theory test format
For the car theory test, you must pass both sections:
- Multiple-choice questions: 50 questions in 57 minutes, with a pass mark of 43 out of 50.
- Hazard perception: 14 video clips, with a pass mark of 44 out of 75.
You must pass both parts to pass the test. You can check the latest requirements on the official GOV.UK website.
5. Take mock tests
Mock tests help you become familiar with the question format and practise managing your time.
Try completing them without distractions. Pay particular attention to topics where you regularly lose marks, and keep practising until you can achieve consistently strong results in both sections.
6. Avoid last-minute cramming
Give yourself enough time to prepare. Short, regular revision sessions are often easier to manage than trying to learn everything the night before your test.
Get a good night’s sleep and allow yourself time to arrive calmly on test day.
7. Use official revision resources
Use the official Highway Code and GOV.UK theory test guidance alongside suitable practice materials. This helps you learn the correct rules and understand how the test works.
